Ginpaku is the Japanese art of applying silver leaf to objects. This beautiful bowl made in Kutani has genuine silver foil under a crackled blue glaze.

Matcha tea needs a different type of preparation than other teas. Because of the super fine grinding of the leaves (think talcum powder), the tea is traditionally whisked in a bowl with high sides. The whisking prevents clumps of tea powder sticking together, like a bad batch of chunky gravy! The high sided bowl keeps the tea from splashing around. This preparation is part of the beauty of this tea and forces you to take a some time and care. A nice way to start your day, or take your mind off of other concerns for a few moments. Once made, the tea is enjoyed directly from the bowl.
